Evaluation of Community Cancer Support Service Pilot Projects - Urban
Evaluation of Community Cancer Support Service Pilot Projects - Urban
Client: Ministry of Health
The Ministry of Health has engaged HOI to conduct a three year evaluation of three pilot programmes providing community cancer support services. The services, being provided in the Lakes, Auckland and West Coast districts, aim to assist patients and family/whānau affected by cancer to navigate the cancer continuum, with the ultimate goals of reducing inequalities in service access and care, particularly for Māori and Pacific as well as individuals living in rural areas. The evaluation, which covers assessment of programme processes, impacts and outcomes, will examine programme data and feedback from key stakeholders, including service providers, health professionals, patients, family/whānau, local community groups (e.g., local marae, cancer networks), DHB and Ministry stakeholders. Consultation strategies include a mix of individual and group interviews. Collection of programme data enables evaluation of service throughputs, referral patterns and other quantitative measures. Focus group with Māori and Pacific stakeholders are being conducted in partnership with Kataraina Pipi and David Lui respectively. A key aspect of the evaluation is to assess the extent to which the services help to link patients and their whānau into other community services. As such, the evaluation will target local community groups and services to obtain feedback on the effectiveness of the cancer support services.
