Rural Access Review

Rural Access Review

Client: Cancer Institute NSW

As part of the NSW Cancer Plan 2004-2006, the Cancer Institute commissioned a review of rural access to cancer services, Health Outcomes International we re-appointed to carry out this review. The review determined the cancer services accessed by patients in rural and outer metropolitan areas and identified any barriers or obstacles to access by those patients.  Specifically, the review evaluated and identified gaps in the travel, support and accommodation needs of those patients and determined any issues affecting the access and utilisation of the available accommodation facilities.  The outcome of the review also identified possible partners in both government, non-government, community and other organisations that could develop programs to close the gaps identified as part of the review.  The review also evaluated the access of rural practitioners to the oncology team and in metropolitan based continuing education programs offered through teaching hospitals.
