Specific Competence:

Russell has recently joined HOI as a Senior Consultant. He brings extensive industry knowledge and experience in the health and education sectors. His health sector experience over the last 12 years has been wide-ranging: from employment at the New Zealand AIDS Foundation, leading a recruitment team for a national research project and acting as senior manager in its support and counselling programme. His public health experience includes three positions: the delivery of Health Promoting Schools (HPS) for the Northland DHB as well as being a member of the national HPS coordination team, coordination of the NDHB Healthy Eating Healthy Action (HEHA) development; leading the Fruit in Schools initiative nationally for the Ministry of Health; coordinating a health promotion steering group for the Te Tai Tokerau PHO; and project managing workshops for the Cancer Society’s LiveSmart Campaign in the supermarket setting.

Initially, Russell was a secondary school teacher for 20 years, in New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Germany. His teaching experience included classroom teaching, staff and budget management, and curriculum development. He was a member of two New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) panel of experts: to develop unit standards for international languages as well as sexual and reproductive health.

Russell has comprehensive experience in managing stakeholder groups and networks as well as professional development workshop planning and delivery. Since joining HOI, Russell has been involved in an evaluation of the Tracks are for Trains rail safety education programme, evaluation of South Island School-Based Edible Gardens projects, and evaluation of the Self-Harm and Suicide Prevention Collaborative.
