Evaluation of the Health Impact Assessment Support Unit: Online Survey

Welcome to the online survey for the evaluation of the Ministry of Health’s Health Impact Assessment Support Unit (HIASU).

This survey is for anyone who has:

• Been involved in undertaking health impact assessments; or
• Has attended HIA training; or
• Has had any contact with the HIASU.

The survey is part of an evaluation of the HIASU. The evaluation is looking at the activities and achievements of the HIASU to date, and the short-term impacts of the HIASU’s work.

What will be asked of me as part of this study?

The survey should take approximately 20 minutes to complete. It asks questions about:

• HIA training
• Guidance and support offered by the HIASU
• Your involvement (or not) in conducting HIA
• Barriers, enablers and progress toward embedding HIA in policy making in New Zealand
• Opportunities for improvement moving forward

Why will the study be useful?

The findings of the evaluation will help the Ministry to provide advice and make decisions about future work to embed health impact assessment as part of policy development processes in New Zealand.

Who else is involved in the study?

As part of the evaluation we are also interviewing key stakeholders from selected central and local government agencies, public health units, universities, and private firms involved in health impact assessment.

We are also reviewing core literature, documentation and data relating to the goals and achievements of the HIASU.

How will the study be reported?

The evaluation findings will be written up in a report for the Ministry of Health which is due in January 2010. The Ministry will consider the report and develop a communication plan for the findings.

Ethics and confidentiality

Any information collected for this study will be confidential to the members of the evaluation team and held in a secure location. Only HOI evaluators will know the names of participants in the survey. Your name will not appear in any material written as a result of this study.
